Endocrine system function and hormones

Endocrine system: The system concerned with the formation and secretions of hormones is endocrine system.
Endocrine gland: Endocrine glands are ductless gland that empty their secretions directly into blood.
They produce hormones.

Name of endocrine glands-

  • Pituitary gland
  • Hypothalamus
  • Thyroid gland
  • Parathyroid gland
  • Pancreas
  • Adrenal gland
  • Testis
  • Ovary
  • (Kidney, liver, placenta etc. secrete hormone by their endocrine cells. But they are not endocrine glands).

Hormones of pituitary gland and their functions-
1. Anterior pituitary –

  • Growth Hormone(GH)
  • Adreno Cortico Tropic Hormone(ACTH)
  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone(TSH)
  • Follicle Stimulating Hormone(FSH)
  • Leutinizing Hormone(LH)
  • Prolactin(PRL)

2. Posterir pituitary –

  • Antidiuretic Hormone(ADH)
  • Oxytocin

Functions of pituitary hormones-
Growth hormone – Stimulates body growth.
Adrenocorticotropic hormone – Causes the adrenal cortex to secrete adrenocortical hormone more.
Thyroid Stimulating hormone – Stimulates thyroid gland to secrete hormone.
Follicle stimulating hormone – Helps in growth of follicle in overies during ovulation.
Leutinizing Hormone – Helps in sexual activity and fertility.
Prolactin – Promotes the secretion of milk.
Antidiuretic hormone – Increase H2O reabsorption in kidney.
Oxytocin – contracts the uterus to induce labour.
Hormone of thyroid gland and their functions-
Hormone of thyroid gland-
Thyroxin (T4).
Tri-oidothyronine (T3)
Calcitonin

Functions-
A. Thyroxine and tri-oidothyronine-
a. Increase the general level of body metabolism
b. Help in normal growth and development
B. Calcitonin- Decreases ca++ concentration in extra cellular fluid.

Parathyroid hormone and their functions-
Hormone of parathyroid gland.
Parathyormone(PTH)
Functions-
Increase Ca++ absorption in intestine.
Helps in bone formation, remodelling and repair.
Controls Ca++ concentration in extra-cellular fluid.

Hormones of pancrease –
Insulin
Glucagon
Somatostatin
functions-
Insulin- Reduce blood glucose level and increase carbohydrate storage in the body.
Glucagon- Increase blood glucose level and increase glucose release form liver.

Hormone of testis –
Testosterone
Inhibin
Functions –
Testosterone-
Stimulates the growth of male sex organs.
Promotes the development of male secondary sexual characteristics.

Hormones of ovary –
Estrogen
Progesterone
Relaxin
Inhibin

Functions-
Estrogen– Stimulates the development of female sex organs, breast and secondary sexual characteristics.
Progesterone –
Maturation of accessory sex organs of female.
Maintain the secondary sexual characteristics of female.
Prepares the endometrium for implantation of fertilized ovum.
Relaxin – Facilitates delivery by softening and dilating the uterine cervix.
