Define Body Fluids and details about it

Written by jobaer , 277 Views, Date : 10 Mar, 18

Body fluids are liquids originating from inside the bodies of living organism.
A important percentage of the human body is water, which is called intracellular fluids and extracellular fluids.

Compartments:
About 60% of human body is fluid (40 – 42 liters in a man of 72kg)
Extra-cellular fluid(ECF)
Intra-cellular fluid(ICF)
Extra-cellular – the fluid that occupies outside of cell is extra-cellular fluid. About 20%(14-15 liters) fluid is extra-cellular.
Intra-cellular fluid – The fluid that occupies inside of cell is intracellular fluid.About 40%(25-27 liters) fluid is intracellular.

Body fluid include:

  • Blood serum
  • Breast milk
  • Vomit
  • Urine
  • Cerebrospinal fluid
  • Cerumen (earwax)
  • Aqueous humour and vitreous humour
  • Bile
  • Endolymph and perilymph
  • Peritoneal fluid
  • Pleural fluid
  • Mucus (including nasal drainage and phlegm)
  • Tears
  • Vaginal secretion
  • Saliva
  • Female ejaculate
  • Gastric juice
  • Sebum (skin oil)
  • Semen
  • Sweat

Volume of daily water intake and output:
Intake:

A Fluids ingested 2100ml
B From metabolism 200ml
Total intake 2300ml

Output:
Insensible loss –

Skin 350ml
Lungs 350ml
Sweat 100ml
Faces 100ml
Urine 1400ml

Causes of fluid loss from body and gain in body-

Water produced during metabolism

A. Causes of fluid loss from body:
Body temperature
Hot weather
Heavy exercise
Insensible loss of water
B. Water gain
Drinking
Food water

Normal plasma electrolytes:
Cations:

  • Na+ – 124 mosm/L
  • K+ – 4.2 mosm/L
  • Ca++ – 1.3 mosm/L
  • Mg++ – 0.8 mosm/L

Anions:

  • Cl^- -108 mosm/L
  • HCO3- -24 mosm/L
  • HPO4- 2 mosm/L
  • SO4- – 0.5 mosm/L

Cause of sodium depletion

  • Addision’s disease
  • Chronic pyelonephritis
  • Sever diarrhoea
  • Sever sweating
  • Sever burn

Roles of body water-
It is essential constituents of cell
It is transport nutrients, waste products
It helps in cellular reactions
It is a solvent in which electrolytes, enzymes, hormones, vitamins are carried.
Maintains body temperature.
